Your solar inverter is the heart of your solar PV system. It converts the electricity generated by your solar panels into usable power for your home or business. When an inverter develops a fault, your solar system may stop generating electricity entirely or operate at significantly reduced efficiency.
At RB Grant Electrical Contractors, we provide professional solar inverter fault diagnosis, troubleshooting and repair services throughout Scotland. Whether your inverter is displaying an error code, has stopped working completely, or your system's performance has dropped unexpectedly, our experienced solar engineers can help.
Solar panels generate Direct Current (DC) electricity. The inverter converts this into Alternating Current (AC) electricity that can be used throughout your property or exported to the grid. Without a functioning inverter, your solar panels cannot deliver usable power to your home or business.
Because the inverter manages the electrical conversion process, it is often one of the most important components within a solar PV system. Industry articles reviewed indicate that inverter and electrical component issues account for a significant proportion of solar system failures.
One of the most common symptoms of an inverter fault is a complete loss of power production.
Potential causes include:
Many modern inverters display fault codes when a problem occurs.
Common fault indicators include:
If your generation figures suddenly drop while weather conditions remain similar, the inverter may not be operating correctly.
Possible causes include:
Buzzing, clicking, humming or fan issues can indicate that internal inverter components require inspection.
We use professional testing equipment to identify the cause of inverter failures and system performance issues.
Our service includes:
Where practical and economically viable, we can arrange repair or replacement solutions for faulty inverter systems.
We assist with many leading manufacturers including:
If an inverter cannot be repaired cost-effectively, we can recommend and install a suitable replacement system.
Our engineers will ensure:
If your solar system isn't generating as expected, we can investigate:

Many inverter faults involve replaceable components or electrical issues which may be repairable, depending on the age, condition and manufacturer support available.
Common signs include fault codes, reduced performance, blank displays, unexpected shutdowns and unusual noises.
Lifespan varies depending on manufacturer, operating conditions and installation quality. Individual manufacturers provide warranty periods that should be checked against your system documentation.
Yes. We can assess older systems and recommend modern replacement options compatible with your existing solar array.

First place to look for an inverter fault in the app found with most modern inverters. For older inverters you need to look at the onboard screen. You can easily download you inverter manual from the internet to assist.
Your inverter will let you know what the fault is by displaying a fault code. You can find these codes in your inverter manual.
You need to go the fuseboard and make sure the circuit breaker is on. You should also check its not a RCD main switch that has tripped. You should also have an additional inverter rotary isolator and make sure you have lights on the PV generation meter.
This is best performed during daylight hours. You need to isolate the power by either switching off the circuit breaker or the rotary isolator. Once power is off wait 15 minutes and put the inverter back on.
Time to phone an expert then. Take a note of the manufacturer, model and serial number. If the inverter is still under warranty then phone the manufacturer. If its out with the warranty you need an experienced solar pv installer to help.
I would not even think about doing that. Inverters should only be installed by and approved MCS contractor.
