Electric vehicles (EVs) can be charged using either a domestic socket or a dedicated charging point. While domestic sockets are convenient, they pose several risks and limitations. In contrast, dedicated EV charging points offer a safer, faster, and more energy-efficient solution.
Charging points are designed with advanced safety features, including systems that disconnect the current when the vehicle is not actively charging. This prevents unnecessary energy use and reduces the risk of electrical faults.
Using a domestic socket to charge your EV can be dangerous. If the vehicle is driven away while still plugged in, it may cause severe damage to your home’s electrical system. Additionally, older or faulty wiring may not be able to handle the load, leading to potential overloads and damage to other appliances.
Domestic sockets typically deliver 13 amps, which can take 8 to 12 hours to fully charge an EV. In contrast, dedicated charging stations deliver higher currents, significantly reducing charging time. The fastest commercial charging points can recharge a vehicle in as little as 20 minutes.
R.B. Grant installs EV charging points with dedicated earth protection systems, such as TT protection, to ensure maximum safety. These systems are designed to cut power instantly in the event of a fault—such as touching a conductive metal part on an appliance—preventing electric shock and other hazards.
Modern EV charging points communicate with your vehicle and with you. They notify you when charging is complete, help detect faults, and even alert manufacturers if a damaged battery is connected. This smart interaction ensures efficient energy use and helps reduce your electricity bills.

R.B. Grant can supply clients with a variety of charging points to help meet all their requirements. R.B. Grant are approved installers of Elektromotive.
We are trying to expand the charging points throughout Scotland to help with the future of the environment. If you’re interested in EV and the installation of a dedicated charging point at your home or for your business, contact R.B. Grant or read about our installations here.
