Article from St Andrews Citizen – Scott Filipovic, 2nd year Apprentice of the Year award

A YOUNG apprentice electrician in Fife has scooped top honours at Adam Smith College for the second year running.

Scott Filipovic (19) has won the 2nd year Apprentice of the Year award, at the Kirkcaldy college, topping off his success as Apprentice of the Year there last year.

Yesterday (Thursday), he was attending the national competition’s regional final in Falkirk. Scott, who lives with his parents, Philip and Kathleen and brother Graeme in Balmullo, has worked for electrical contractor R.B. Grant for just over two years and has impressed boss Ronnie with his keenness and aptitude.

“There has been a major change in the quality of apprentices in the last few years, as it’s a great alternative to university,” he said.

“Scott could have easily chosen that path. He has exceptional skills for his short time in the electrical industry, is enthusiastic and willing to learn and his communication skills with both his fellow employees and the clients are a credit to such a young man. He is a very good all-round employee.”

Scott’s SVQ level 3 in electrical installation course at Adam Smith College is in blocks of five weeks in the first year and three-week blocks in the second year. He decided to become and electrician as his father was an engineer and he liked the idea of having a job where he could use both his hands and his head.

As Ronnie pointed out, his qualification will also allow him to travel and work anywhere in Europe and make employment further afield easier.
